Fire safety equipment only works on the day it is needed if it has been maintained every other day. Extinguishers need pressure checks, alarms need test schedules, escape routes need clear signage and every item needs a documented inspection trail.

Essential Equipment by Area

• Portable extinguishers - ABC dry powder for general areas, CO2 for electrical rooms.
• Fire blankets - kitchens, laboratories and workshops.
• Alarms and detectors - interlinked where sleeping or high-risk areas exist.
• Escape signage - photoluminescent signs on every exit route.

Inspection Schedule

Monthly: check pressure gauges, seals, access routes and sign visibility. Annually: full service by a certified technician, with discharge testing on the statutory cycle. Keep the service tags on the units - auditors read the tags first.

Blocked extinguishers behind stock are as dangerous as missing ones. Access checks belong on the daily walkthrough.

Train the Response, Not Just the Equipment

Run drills, train fire wardens and post clear evacuation maps. Equipment and training together form the fire safety system - either one alone is incomplete.
